On the way home from a fieldtrip to a local police station, one of my students asked me, "Did the Policemen have guns?"
I said, "Yes, they did."
The little boy volunteered, as five year olds often do, more information than I wanted. "My dad has a beebee gun. He shoots squirrels and birds with it."
Since the boy's mother was one of the chaperones, she quickly corrected her son. "Ms. Cardello, my husband does have a beebee gun, but I assure you that he does not shoot animals with it."
Her son agreed. "Not when she's around."
I imagine there was a lively discussion in that house that evening.
